What worked - sun, speakers, booths, music (except the last musician), interviews, T-shirts, banner, location

Could be improved - do a video shoot demo of a person learning at each booth, need more people, need more publicity, involve KGW since their studio will be on the square, covers for the tables

I was perhaps not surprised, but a little disappointed by the turnout, and without a lot more expensive publicity I am not sure next year would be substantially different being, as we are, somewhat dependent on people walking past. Which makes me wonder if the expensive parts are worth the expense. Are we getting bang for the buck?
I noticed during the event that we had the speakers speaking to the camera. That made me wonder if the bigger part of the audience we had for the event was on television. Maybe next year we should just shoot video in advance and broadcast it that day or something. Then either not have the live-in-person event, or make it more a party thing and less a teach-in.
The music should have been louder at the beginning and then softer at the end. Part of the idea was that music would attract people to the square. The very nice guitar music was too quiet to serve that purpose very well.
Oh. I had another random idea: A poem contest on the virtues of the Internet or something. People vote for the ones they like best.
On a positive note, the network seemed to work well. I didn't hear any complaints anyway. City of Portland IT guy (Adam?) and his precut precrimped cat5 lengths made for a much less painful setup than I had imagined. If we do the Pioneer Courthouse Square again, a reprise of the DSL service would be recommended.
For participants, one other lead I had that I didn't have time to followup this year was OHSU, which apparently has some kind of grant for developing online health information resources. Again, I didn't follow up on it, but I have a name somewhere on my desk or ???.

I think if we have more time to promote the event we will have better attendance in 2009. (The tactics were good, but the timing couldn't be helped this year.) I really enjoyed working with everyone and think we got a lot accomplished for our first OneWebDay PDX efforts!

    • Reserved from 8AM to 7PM Sept 22nd (actually doing the event from 10AM-2PM not including set up and break down)

  1. Getting a temporary DSL line through Qwest and Easystreet, 7Mbps down/?? up. Should be installed and working on Sep 19.
  2. Personal Telco wifi node, Russell tested the bandwidth and it appears to be 1.5Mbps down (upstream speed is unknown).
  3. Cricket Wireless USB cell phone connections (24, 2 per booth)
  4. other fiber connection?

  • Suggestion (from Russell): Hey I thought of something else we could spend money on: TeeShirts? Maybe volunteers should wear some matching tee shirt or polo or something with a OneWebDay logo thingie, and then have name tags that identify them and their organization (if any).
  • There are umpteeump t-shirts and hats and mugs available at cost at CafePress. Go for it.
  • Sponsor table for all the sponsors and their giveaways
